It’s never too early to start your fall decorating

We’re getting closer to my favorite time of year … fall. Since I’ve had enough of this summer heat, I am highly anticipating the change of seasons.

This weekend I’ve been doing some deep cleaning at home. Hockey season is approaching, and this means we won’t be spending much time at home. So, I decided to get cleaning and this way I can keep up with maintaining a somewhat organized household during this busy time.

You know sometimes when I get in one of these cleaning moods, it inspires me to want to make some changes. With fall on its way, I’m thinking a little painting may be in order. I noticed on the front page of the Redplum insert, Sherwin-Williams has 30 percent off paint through Sept. 6. I’m looking for a new color for the master bedroom.

While in Lake Geneva, Wis., recently, I was in a home décor shop. The designer in this shop was telling me that yellows and grays are the hot colors right now in decorating.

When making these changes in my home, I need a starting point – a color inspiration. Target has 8-piece bedding sets for $59. This sounds like a good place to start.

Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri mantra for home furnishing KEEP IT SIMPLE!!

Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri Khan, who are new brand ambassadors for furnishing major D’ décor, has a simple mantra for decorating houses ‘just keep it simple and do not go for bizarre color combinations.’

In fact, Gauri Khan, who is the real in- charge of decoration department at Shah Rukh Khan’s home ‘Mannat’, says that she loves to keep some spare space in her house. She does not like to stuff things in her house and instead of that, keeps it simple by selecting colors and fabrics that suit the personalities of the occupants of her house.

In other words, the tastes of hubby Shah Rukh Khan and children– Aryan and Suhana—are kept in mind. Comfort is of paramount importance to Gauri while deciding on fabrics and colors for her house. The lady fully emphasizes the importance of house being a place where her man should crave to return in the evening after a tiring working day.

The tips are handy for the Indian housewives and Gauri Khan vouches for D’ décor in the matter. However, the lady is very particular about her likes and dislikes about endorsement deals and went for that particular brand only because she was impressed with  and using some of their designs already at Mannat.

This is for the first time that Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan have come together for a commercial endorsement deal, and so Gauri was extra careful in her choice of the brand. She ensured that the endorsement was genuine and not done only because somebody paid her for that.

In fact, Shah Rukh Khna had earlier said that he was playing only second fiddle to Gauri in the advertisement as he did not understand colors and fabrics.

He also joked that the makers of the fabrics used him only to grab attention of the audiences while the real boss in the matter was his wife Gauri Khan.

In any case, Gauri Khan has carved a niche for herself in the fashion world by her stylish presentation at the functions with SRK. The lady has a fine taste in fashionable things, which reflects her personality and grace.

Smart Spending: Do up your dorm room for under $75

When textbooks and other obligations soak up so much money as college begins, making a cramped dorm room comfy, colorful and classy can seem like a lost cause, but students and their families don’t have to spend a lot.

Experts say a cap of $75 is realistic for students moving into a room furnished with a bed, dresser and desk but nothing else.

“You’re not looking for investment pieces,” says Stan Williams, author of “The Find: The Housing Works Book of Decorating,” and a blog called elegantthrifter.blogspot.com. “You’re looking for something that fits into a small space and cheap.”

Dr. Susan Baxter, assistant professor of marketing and management at LIM, a college based in New York with a focus on fashion and retailing, recommends starting with information from the college on the room’s dimensions and what is supplied.

Next, students should make a list of what’s missing and compare prices on sites like pricegrabber.com. They also can flip through decor magazines and websites that offer vignettes to find styles they like.

But before buying anything, check with siblings or friends who are trying to unload items, and check the college’s Facebook page and its marketplace section for items for sale. Check the website Narts.org for listings of local thrift and consignment shops. Also try freecycle.com, which matches people giving things away with others who want the stuff, Baxter suggests.

Here are ways to decorate four areas of your room for less than $75 in all:

1. WALL DECOR. Bypass the frame store and fancy museum shops and head to thrift stores and flea markets to pick up vintage postcards that can be created into a collage or even a framed painting whose original owner has tired of it, or try sites like postcardguy.com and Zazzle.com. Williams says not to pay more than $1 per postcard. Better yet, save postcards from friends and family, and don’t spend a dime.

Decorating Tips for Your Home

Everyone has a room in their home that needs a little love. Why not jazz it up and add a sense of style that won’t only look great, but completes the entire room? Here’s some easy tips to create a more homey space and well-designed atmosphere. With a little guidance, anyone can do this. The main thing to remember is balance. You want to think of the bigger picture, so that the final result looks complete and well put together.

General Decorating

A great tip for placing items is grouping them in threes. Sometimes when you put two things together, it feels like something is missing. Three is the perfect number! Keep this in mind when you’re decorating any space in your home. If you want to shop around for some new items try the Crowne Shoppe on Sunrise Highway. They have some really cute nicknacks.

It’s OK to mix patterns, but make sure they relate to one another. Whether by color or theme, they shouldn’t contrast with each other.

Play with textures! No one wants to be in a flat room. Choose your textures wisely and get creative. Having a high-textured rug in the room brings warmth and depth to any space, especially when your furniture may be a little cold (metals and glass).  Add some patterned curtains and fun pillows, and the whole room will feel lifted.

Wall Space

Remember that when hanging photos and framed pieces, the middle should always be at eye level.  If you’re shorter than most people, just raise it an inch or two. I go nuts when I visit people’s homes and they have pictures hanging almost from the ceiling. Whoa!  If you have frames that run along the lines of your doorways, that’s a no no.  Who lives with you?  The Jolly Green Giant!

Also, try not to make your home look like a gallery or museum. Not everything has to be placed in a row.  Sometimes, depending on the piece, you can raise one of them so they’re not so streamlined. You want your house to look lived in, not like a museum.

Bookshelves

Organize your books into categories. Either group them by color, by size or both.  It’s also good to keep certain subjects together so you can find what you’re looking for in a pinch.

Sometimes it’s cool to have a section of old vintage books to add a sense of history to a room. Shop the online store at the Village Bookshoppe on North Village Avenue to check out their selection.  I’m sure you’ll find something!

If you’re a collector, this is a great opportunity to let your collectibles shine. You don’t want too many, so make sure you pick your favorites. The New Leaf Garden Center on North Long Beach Road carries vintage-inspired finds that have a natural feel to them. You might find some treasure there!

Always keep some space around the items and don’t crowd the shelves. You want your book shelf to stand out, not just one particular item, so keep with general themes.

Pretty Eats: 7 Simple Ways to Decorate with Food

With a fresh crop of garden produce filling fridges, pantries, and countertops, now is a great time to put your bounteous harvest to work in a useful way.  While waiting to be consumed, there’s no reason to overwhelm your kitchen with a bevy of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Instead, store them around your house in simple, stunning ways.  While not all farmer’s market finds are durable enough to be used as decor (produce like lettuce, berries, and fresh-cut herbs are some of the more delicate fresh foods) many foods: citrus, squash, and most root vegetables will last for several days in a temperature-controlled home.  Here are seven incredible, simple ways to stylishly store some of the hardiest seasonal crops as decor around your home.

Decorate with Artichokes

Artichokes are not only sturdy enough for a one-day decor job, but their pale green,  floral-esque leaves create truly inspiring, peaceful centerpiece arrangements.  Another option: slice the top off the artichoke, and scoop out the center pith to create a small, earthy vase for fresh flowers.

Dos and don’ts of decorating

Some people can turn a cheap apartment full of thrift store finds into an oasis of elegant living, while others can turn a posh condo into a cluttered mess of clashing big-ticket furniture.

Peggy Ann Turner, a Montreal-based architect and interior designer with Peterson Architects, has tips on how to and how not to decorate.

Dos

Before you move, edit. This is the time to review what you have, measure it, not just for size, and think about what to keep and what to discard. Visit your new place and think about the layout.

Know your personal style. If you don’t, go through the magazines and decide what you like and don’t like. You’ll eventually see a pattern.

Hire a professional decorator, even if you can’t afford the full service. A two-hour consultation can provide you with a fresh eye, ideas and sources. A decorator can cost from $100 to $350 an hour.

Invest in physical and visual comfort. That means a good bed with comfortable linens and good seating. If visual is important to you, invest in art or beautiful things like an antique rug that you will keep forever.

Colour rules. Each environment has its own restrictions. Perhaps you don’t want to paint a south-facing room red because it will be too overwhelming.

Matching is not required.

Shop first for the largest items, like a sofa, which will be the focal point of a room. Some people might choose a rug as a focal point.

Buy furniture that is versatile and can change location or function if you move.

Size matters. Balance space with proportion, colour and lighting.

Mix old with new. Being modern doesn’t mean you can’t live with the past.

The biggest bang for your buck is paint.

Balance your lighting. There are three levels of light: general, task and mood. You can change the mood of the room by varying what you use when.

Bedrooms need to be serene and restful. You can achieve that with colour and light. Neutral colours, whether warm or cool, are a good idea.

Storage. Everything should have a home.

Don’ts

Don’t overdo it. Think of Coco Chanel and her exhortation to remove one piece of jewellery before you leave home. It works the same for design.

Don’t keep items that are not functional or beautiful.

Clutter: Just don’t. Possessions can possess you. Luxury is about space, quality of light and order.

Don’t overwhelm your windows. The important thing is to let natural light in and have privacy as well.

Don’t mix your whites. As anyone with even the most perfunctory experience with paint knows, there are 1,001 and counting shades of white. A buttery white will look lousy next to a pink white.

Don’t buy into trends in an expensive way. If turquoise is in (and the forecasters say it is), you might like to indulge in accents like pillows, candle holders or placemats.

Don’t scatter your plants or artwork. Rather, create compositions with groupings of greenery, art or photographs.

Do not place your artwork in relation to the ceiling. Place it at eye level or in relation to the furniture. Generally, the centre of a picture should be five feet from the floor.

Don’t reupholster junk.
